What to know about Matsuyama
The Japanese superstar was a successful amateur golfer having won the 2011 Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters on the Japan Golf Tour while still an amateur and he turned professional in 2013.
Matsuyama has so far won 20 professional tournaments including 11 PGA Tour events and is the first Japanese golfer to win a men's major golf championship – the 2021 Masters Tournament.

The 32-year-old was in action in the most recent PGA Tour event in 2025 which was the WM Phoenix Open in California, USA where he finished 25th.
Matsuyama is currently placed fifth on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), and his best overall ranking is second place.
Why Matsuyama is one of the favourites
The Sendai, Japan-based golfer won the 2024 Genesis Invitational after shooting a 62 to win his first PGA Tour event since the 2022 Sony Open in Hawaii and he posted the second-lowest round in course history.
Matsuyama, who won 2025 The Sentry, three strokes ahead of Collin Morikawa, will be on a mission to win again and register his second victory in the current PGA Tour season this weekend.

“I wasn’t striking the ball really well but my chipping and putting was working a lot this week, especially the second shot on 15 was one of the best I had. That really helped,” Matsuyama said after winning the 2024 Genesis Invitational.
“Majority of the time when I rate my round, it's usually my ball-striking. Today was an OK round, but I chipped and putted pretty well today, so that’s something that gives me a good momentum, so I think that really helped today.”
